Drawing On: a talk by artist Emma Douglas

Emma is a conceptual artist working in paint, print, sculpture, photography and film. This talk follows a recent exhibition of the artist’s work at the Hostry.

The work, done over the last eight years, is about her late son Cato. The number of days that he lived, her memories of him and his legacy. In layers of painted words, carved names, intricate threads and colourful grids, she remembers him in different ways.

Taking a long time to make her work, just as it takes time to reflect on events. Emma works with and from her diaries and Cato’s hospital records, his clothes, his belongings and all that she has that was his.

Emma did her BA in Fine Art at Middlesex Polytechnic and her MA in printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 1983. She has exhibited in many London galleries, including at Haywood Gallery, Serpentine Gallery, Royal Academy and Flowers East. She won the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2013 and 2015.

Monday 20th May, New Start Time: 7.00pm
The Auditorium, The Forum, Norwich
Members £2.50, non-members £4.50

Contact Gallery: The Drawing Show: A film by Mike Toll

Mike Toll sadly died last year, but he left boxes full of VHS video tapes that record his interviews with artists who took part in solo and group exhibitions at the Contact Gallery, Norwich in the mid 1980-90’s. Norfolk Contemporary Art Society and Norwich 20 Group plan to transfer these videos to a more usable DVD format. One of the films, Contact Gallery: The Drawing Show is to be shown at a joint event, on Tuesday 11 June. Thirty years on, this is a chance to relive this Norwich exhibition which includes interviews with many of the artists who took part, some of whom are attending the showing and will take part in a short discussion afterwards.

The film is 73 minutes long, and contains interviews with many of the artists who took part in the exhibition, including Brüer Tidman, Zheni Warner, Emrys Parry, Peter Baldwin, David Woods, Ivy Smith and Mike Chapman.

The Auditorium, The Forum, Norwich Tuesday 11th June at 7.00 pm

NCAS/N20G members £2.50/non-members £4.50

Brüer Tidman, Zheni Warner and Emrys Parry appear in the film from nearly 30 years ago
